Somewhere between midwestern cornfields and Appalachia lie these rolling hardwood foothills you never knew existed. Inside the Hoosier National Forest, babbling brooks meander through diverse woodlands filled with old sycamore, beech, oak, columnar white pine and scruffy shagbark hickory trees.
This forest provides mile after mile of pristine nature with plenty of trails to challenge all levels of hikers. You can camp at a designated campground, or heed the call of adventure and blaze your own trail to a secluded bivouac founded by you, and you alone.
- Deploy: We'll set out on your foray bright and early at 6:30 a.m. from Osmium Coffee, 1117 W Belmont to beat the gnarly Chicago traffic.
- Embark: The four-and-a-half-hour drive will land us just south of Bloomington, Ind.
- Return: After four days and three nights wondering and wandering, your ride back to Chicago will be waiting for you at noon. Reward yourself with a satiating meal from one of Bloomington's finest university stomps before the bulk of the return trip.
